Grok Bot Notifications Not Working? How to Fix Them

By DoNotify Team • • 3 min read • 4 views

Grok Bot sends a notification when a Bot finishes a job or is waiting for you, with a question or an approval. If those have stopped arriving, the cause is almost always one of the settings below. Work through them in order.

1. Turn on notifications for that Bot

Notifications are switched on per Bot, not for the whole app. On your phone, open the Bot's profile and turn on Notifications. On a computer, ask the Bot to turn its notifications on. Group chats do not have this switch.

2. Allow notifications on your phone

The Bot's switch and your phone's permission both have to be on. Grok Bot asks for permission the first time you open it, and it is easy to tap "Don't Allow."

  • iPhone: Settings > Notifications > Grok Bot > Allow Notifications.
  • Android: Settings > Apps > Grok Bot > Notifications.

Check that Focus or Do Not Disturb is not holding them back. On iPhone, x.ai also says push delivery is rolling out gradually, so some accounts get it later than others.

3. Your computer is getting them instead

While the Grok Bot desktop app is in use on a Mac or Windows PC, notifications go to the computer. A Bot that finishes a job skips your phone completely. A Bot that needs your input pings your phone about three minutes later, unless you open that Bot first.

On Linux, notifications are held back while the Grok Bot window is focused. If you are leaving your desk and want alerts on your phone, quit the desktop app.

4. You have both the Grok app and the Grok Bot app

Staff on the Grok Bot support forum said in late October that alerts now go to the app you used most recently with your Bots. Open your Bots in the app you want alerts in. Staff also said old device registrations can stay on their side after you sign out, so an old phone may keep getting alerts for a while.

5. The Bot is hidden

A Bot you have hidden from the sidebar does not send the delayed phone alert from step 3. Unhide it if you still want to hear from it.

6. Routines need you within 30 minutes

When a routine needs your approval, the request expires after about 30 minutes. x.ai recommends turning on notifications for every Bot that runs routines. Otherwise an approval can lapse without you ever seeing it.

7. Restart and update

Fully quit Grok Bot (on a Mac, quit from the menu bar rather than closing the window), reopen it, and try again. Update the app on your phone and your computer.

When a notification is not enough

Even when everything works, a push notification is easy to miss when your phone is on silent or in a bag. If a Bot spots a failed payment or a message from your kid's school overnight, you may not hear about it until morning.

For those few alerts, give the Bot a way to ring your phone. DoNotify places a real call and reads a short message out loud, and it works on a landline. Setup takes a few minutes on the AI agents page. For everything a Bot can do with a phone line, see can Grok Bot make phone calls.

Frequently asked questions

Why am I not getting Grok Bot notifications?

Usually the Bot's own Notifications switch is off, your phone has not allowed notifications for Grok Bot, or the desktop app is open and the alerts went to your computer.

Why do Grok Bot notifications go to my computer and not my phone?

While the desktop app is in use, notifications go there. Finished jobs skip your phone, and a Bot that needs input pings your phone about three minutes later unless you open it first.

Do I have to turn on notifications for each Bot?

Yes. Each Bot has its own Notifications switch in its profile on your phone. On a computer, ask the Bot to turn them on.

Can Grok Bot text me or call me?

Its documented alerts are push and desktop notifications only. To get a phone call when a Bot finds something urgent, connect a calling service such as DoNotify.
