Can Grok Bot Make Phone Calls? How to Give Your Bot a Phone Line
Not out of the box. Grok Bot does not come with a phone line. When a Bot finishes a job or needs your answer, it tells you with a push notification on your phone or an alert on your computer. x.ai's docs do not mention calls or texts.
Connect DoNotify and your Bot can ring your real phone, including a landline, and read out what it found. It can call you right away or schedule a call for later.
What your Bot can do with DoNotify
- Call you the moment something is urgent. A Bot watching your inbox can ring you when your bank flags a sign-in or the school emails, and say who it is from.
- Schedule a call for later. Ask "call me tomorrow at 9am about the dentist" and your phone rings at 9.
- Read out exactly what it found, so you know what the call is about before you unlock anything.
You do not need to buy a phone number or sign up with a phone company. DoNotify places the call for your Bot.
Coming soon: calls to businesses
DoNotify is adding calls to businesses. Your Bot will be able to have DoNotify call a restaurant or a doctor's office and hold the conversation for you, for things like booking a table or asking about an opening. It is rolling out soon. To try it first, ask for early access.
Why a call instead of a notification
A notification is easy to miss. If your phone is on silent or in another room, you find out in the morning. And while the Grok Bot desktop app is in use, alerts go to your computer instead of your phone. More on that in Grok Bot notifications not working.
A ringing phone is hard to sleep through. Use calls for the few alerts that cannot wait, and leave notifications for the rest.
How to set it up
- Create a free DoNotify account and save your phone number in your profile.
- Create an API token in your profile.
- Give your Bot the DoNotify skill file and the token. The AI agents setup page has both.
- Tell the Bot when to call. For example: "If an email from my bank or the school comes in, call me and say who it is from."
It takes a few minutes, and new accounts get 14 free calls.
Who your Bot can call
Today, only you. Calls go to the number on your own DoNotify account, so a confused Bot cannot start ringing strangers. Every call shows up in your call log, so you can see what your Bot said and when.
